The History of Ashby De La Zouch

The unusual name Ashby De La Zouch has its origin in the 12th century Lord of the manor, Alan De La Zouch, who named the town in order to distinguish it from the other Ashbys or 'habitations among the trees' in the area.

The Castle

The castle has its origins in an early manor house which was first fortified by the Beaumonts, Earls of Leicester in the mid-12th century. It grew steadily under the La Zouch family & saw its greatest period of strength after passing to the Hastings family in 1464.

The Church

The Parish Church of the town is mainly of late 15th century construction although there was a church dedicated to St.Helen at the time of the Domesday Book. At the back of the church is a rare finger pillory, which was used to punish those who had misbehaved
in church.
